Smokefree Homes and Cars

In 2007 we began delivery of the project in East Ham North (an area in Newham with high rates of CVD). The aims:

  1. To increase the public awareness around the dangers of secondhand smoke
  2. To reduce the exposure for young children from secondhand smoke
  3. To ask people to pledge their Homes as Smokefree zones

The project was designed to educate parents and caregivers about the health risks to children from secondhand smoke exposure and to commit to making a smokefree homes pledge. On making the pledge, parents received a support pack, which is a combination of leaflets, stickers and an activity book for children to complete.

Three months after people took the pledge we contacted 50 of them to ask if they had remained smokefree. Of the fifty contacted 46 confirmed they had remained smokefree and were invited to an awards ceremony to receive their pledge certificate from the Newham Mayor.
